Pick up almost any ceramic coating and you'll see it: 9H hardness. It's on our BOND·9 bottle too. It's one of the most quoted specs in the detailing world — and one of the most misunderstood. So let's clear it up: what 9H actually means, what it definitely doesn't, and why some of the numbers you see advertised are pure fiction.
9H comes from a pencil test
The "H" doesn't stand for some special coating unit. It comes from the pencil hardness scale — the same grading system used on drawing pencils — measured under a standardized test called ASTM D3363.
That scale runs from very soft to very hard: 9B is the softest, up through B, HB, and F in the middle, then H, 2H, 3H, and so on up to 9H, the hardest. In the test, pencils of increasing hardness are pushed across the cured coating at a set angle and weight. The coating's rating is the hardest pencil that fails to scratch it. When a coating is rated 9H, it means even a 9H pencil — the hardest lead made — won't cut into the film.
What 9H does NOT mean
Here's where the marketing gets slippery, and where we'd rather just be straight with you.
- 9H is not the same as "9" on the Mohs scale. Mohs is the mineral-hardness scale where diamond is 10 and sapphire is 9. Pencil 9H is nowhere near that — the two scales measure different things with different tools. A coating being "9H" does not make it as hard as sapphire.
- 9H does not mean scratch-proof. It means excellent resistance to light scratching and marring. A hard enough impact, a gritty wash mitt, or road debris at speed can still leave a mark. No coating on earth is bulletproof, and any brand implying otherwise is overselling.
- 9H is not a durability rating. Hardness and lifespan are two different things — a coating can be very hard and still wear off if it isn't maintained. (We cover lifespan separately in how long ceramic coating actually lasts.)
The "10H" and "12H" myth
This is the big one. The pencil hardness scale stops at 9H. There is no 10H pencil. There is no 12H. Those grades do not exist in ASTM D3363.
So when you see a coating advertised as "10H" or "12H," you're not looking at a harder product — you're looking at a made-up number designed to sound more impressive than the competition. It's marketing math, not chemistry. 9H is already the top of the recognized scale, which is exactly why honest brands report 9H and stop there.
So what does 9H actually get you?
Plenty — as long as you understand what job it's doing. Your car's factory clear coat is relatively soft, which is why it picks up swirl marks and wash scratches so easily. A 9H ceramic coating adds a hard, sacrificial layer on top of that soft clear coat. Day to day, that means:
- Strong resistance to the light swirls and marring that normally come from washing and drying.
- A tougher surface that shrugs off fine grit instead of letting it bite into your paint.
- Protection that takes the abuse first, so your actual clear coat stays cleaner and lasts longer.
