What water spots actually are
When hard water dries on your paint — from sprinklers, rain, or washing in the sun — it leaves behind mineral deposits. There are two kinds. Surface spots sit on top of the paint and can be washed or dissolved off. Etched spots are worse: the minerals have actually bitten into the clear coat, leaving a mark that cleaning alone won't fix.
How to remove them — gentlest first
- Wash the car first. A proper wash with a pH-balanced shampoo like LATHER removes fresh, light spots on its own.
- Try a vinegar solution on stubborn spots. Mix 50/50 distilled water and white vinegar, apply to the spots, let it dwell briefly, agitate gently with a soft microfiber, then rinse thoroughly. The mild acid dissolves the mineral deposits.
- Re-protect afterward. Vinegar can strip wax or coating protection, so follow up with a ceramic topper like MIST to restore the barrier.
